Difference between College and a University | Study in Canada


Canada nowadays is a top destination for international students to do their further studies. Both for bachelors and masters or even for doctorate degree Canadian University and Colleges are known worldwide for their Education system and after degree opportunities. Students from all over the world are going to Canada for their higher studies and they are making their future even brighter.

Basically, for both Bachelors and Masters there are two options available for the students to choose. One is to enrol in College and second is to enrol in University. College and Universities sound the same but they both are completely different so let us understand the difference between college and university in Canada.

1) Colleges

College is an institution where you will get a 'diploma certificate' which could be of 1 year till 3 years maximum for bachelors. After the end of your study duration, you receive a 'Diploma certificate' which is different from 'Degree'. If you are studying in a college then it is said that you are doing 'Diploma' and after completion, you will get your diploma certificate.

It is also called 'Professional Study' and respective certificate which you will receive is called 'Professional Degree' but generally it is known as 'diploma' and 'diploma certificate'. Now let us talk about the fees structure of the college. Colleges in Canada have fees anywhere between 14,000 CAD to 18,000 CAD per year depending on the college and your field of interest. 

Generally, courses like computer technician, network technician, are available and other related jobs to 'technician' are available for 'diploma certificate' holder. 

Pros of College

>Less duration of studies
>Easy study
>Very job oriented education
>Cheaper and cost-effective

Cons of College

>Not as valuable as compared to a university degree
>You can work as more likely as a technician or at a junior level position

2) University

University is an institution where you will get a 'University degree' which could of 3 years to 4 years for bachelors and 2 years for Masters depending on the university and Course. When you are studying at University it is said that you are studying 'Bachelors or Masters'. 

Fees in Universities are from 25,000 CAD to 50,000 CAD per year depending on the University and your Course. Generally, a Degree is offered to a student after completion of his/her study. You will receive a certificate which is titled a Bachelor in...' or 'Masters in...'

It is observed that the employer gives more preferences to those who hold a university degree that does not mean that the diploma is less valuable.

Cons of University

>Very expensive
>Longer duration fo studies
>Studies are generally hard

Conclusion

Colleges are generally cheaper than universities and colleges have less time duration like 1 to 3 years maximum where universities are of 3 to 4 years for bachelors students and 2 years for masters. Depending on personal goals and financial conditions students chooses either way of two. Both have their very own pros and cons which we had discussed above.
